B2B Debt Collection Success Rates and What They Measure

Sources reviewed October 21, 2026 · Published by RemitRight

A recovery percentage is useful only when you know what happened to which debts over what period. A high rate on selected viable claims does not describe the chance that every overdue invoice will be paid.

Use a defined outcome

Count a positive payment, full payment, dollars recovered and net proceeds separately. For dollar recovery, divide principal actually received by the principal entering the cohort. A reply, promised date or signed payment plan is not completed recovery. A court judgment and subsequent payment are also different stages.

A provider claim has a specific population

The Kaplan Group advertises 85% success for claims above USD 10,000 owed by operating businesses. That is a provider claim about a selected population. Its visible page does not give an audited sample size or a follow-up window, so it cannot supply a general Canadian benchmark.

Industry surveys are not a comparison trial

TransUnion's 2024 industry survey reports distributions of dollar liquidation, including a commercial segment. Its definition uses dollars collected divided by dollars placed or acquired. The sample spans different receivables businesses and is not a randomized comparison of letters, software and agencies.

Late-payment prevalence is different again. Atradius's 2026 North American report describes payment conditions across Canada, the US and Mexico; it does not establish which collection treatment caused an invoice to be paid.

Questions to ask before comparing two percentages

Ask for the underlying counts and treatment period, and check that the populations match.

  • Were rejected and unresolved claims included?
  • Were debts disputed, already placed, old or owed by closed businesses?
  • Does success mean partial cash, full principal or a plan commitment?
  • Are fees deducted, and are results account-weighted or dollar-weighted?
  • What country, industry and invoice-size range does the evidence cover?

How to use incomplete evidence

Compare verified fees and service scope while leaving unknown success estimates unknown. Do not turn missing data into zero or assign a new product an assumed industry rate. A useful case study should show its dates, opening balance, actual cash and costs without presenting one account as a population result.

RemitRight has no verified comparative recovery rate to claim. Its current advantage is its free business software and the workflow it offers; outcomes must be measured on real eligible invoices.

Make a useful next step

For an agreed overdue balance, RemitRight helps with voluntary text follow-up, available payment plans and an owner-reviewed letter draft. The business software is free forever, with no subscription, setup fee or collection commission. Card processing fees apply; customers choosing installments see the total plan fee before agreeing.

Create a free demand-letter draft

An owner-sent template is different from a lawyer letter or a court process. Recovery is not guaranteed. This guide is general information, not legal advice.
